چکیده

[1] We study the polarization properties of the light field under a dynamic ocean surface using realistic linear and nonlinear ocean surface waves. The three-dimensional polarized radiative transfer of the dynamic ocean–atmosphere system is considered using a Monte Carlo vector radiative transfer simulation for arbitrary depth. The program is validated with measurement data taken in Hawaii during the Radiance in a Dynamic Ocean project. The main focus of this study is the influence of the wind-driven ocean waves on the polarization patterns and statistics at different optical depths under various conditions of light wavelength and solar incidence. Of special interest is the effect of the nonlinearity of the surface waves on the polarization statistics. To facilitate the study, phase-resolved direct simulations of the linear and nonlinear surface wavefields are performed using a highorder spectral method. The results show that the time-averaged degree of polarization within the Snell’s window is dependent on the mean square slope of the ocean surface. Higher mean square slope, or wind speed, leads to a smaller degree of polarization. At the same time, the variability of the degree of polarization has a strong dependence on the surface roughness. A rougher ocean surface induces higher variability of the degree of polarization. The effect of wave nonlinearity can be neglected for the mean value of polarization, but is manifested in the variability of the degree of polarization, with a general increase in the variance with increasing wave nonlinearity. The present findings provide possible mechanisms for characterizing the dynamic ocean surface based on underwater polarized light measurements.

BEM-FDM modeling of water free surface interaction with trapped air in OWC chamber for calculating generated power

Free surface modeling plays an important role in some ocean structures design, especially in Oscillating Water Column (OWC) devices. Boundary element method (BEM) is a suitable method for free surface modeling due to its simplicity, quick solving, and low data storage requirement. In this paper, BEM was used for free surface modeling in OWC chamber and out of it. Linear kinematic and dynamic bo...

Using the statistical characteristics is one of the methods to justify the random nature of the ocean waves. Probability function are used to facilitate the studies of the random waves parameters, such as the surface and height and period of the waves. Since, the force of the ocean waves are the prevalent principal forces on the offshore structures, the assignment of the significant structural ...

A nonlinear mapping from dual−polarization SAR image spectra to Ocean wave spectra

It is well known that ocean waves are an important component of upper ocean dynamics. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been widely used to measure ocean surface wave spectra from space since the Seasat satellite was launched in 1978. Many papers have been published dealing with the imaging mechanism and retrieval methodology. Schuler and Lee proposed a method to improve the measurement of...

Analytical Investigation of TM Surface Waves in 1D Photonic Crystals Capped by a Self-Focusing Left-Handed Slab

In this paper, the localized TM surface waves of a nonlinear self-focusingleft-handed slab sandwiched between a uniform medium and a one-dimensionalphotonic crystal (1D PC) is analytically investigated. Our method is based on the firstintegral of the nonlinear Maxwell's equations. For the TM surface waves, the presenceof two electric field components makes the analysis difficult. Therefore, we ...

Underwater Refraction-Polarization Patterns of Skylight Perceived by Aquatic Animals Through Snell's Wiindow of the Flat Water Surface

The grass shrimp (Palaemonetes vuigaris) orients itself by means of the polarization pattern of the sky visible through Snell's window of the water surface. The celestial polarization pattern viewed from water is distortt.~! and modified because of refraction and repolarization of skylight at the air-water interface. This work provides a quantitative account of the repolarization of skylight tr...
